The City of Richmond, Virginia Fire and Emergency Services Receives IAFC-SHSS/VFIS National Safety Recognition
VFIS sponsored and presented the Billy Goldfeder Fire Service Organizational Safety Award to the City of Richmond, Virginia Fire and Emergency Services at the annual conference of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), Safety, Health and Survival Section (SHSS) in Charlotte, NC.
The City of Richmond, Virginia Fire and Emergency Services was recognized for their efforts to pave the way for best practices in fire service health and safety. The department launched a Safety Team focused on improving fireground safety, increasing cancer prevention efforts, advocating for vehicle and driver safety, and occupational safety. Operating like an advocacy group, the team obtains certifications, trains at the highest level and rolls out programs that not only reinforce the 16 Life Safety Initiatives, but also fosters real change within the department. Since the implementation of the Safety Team, the department experienced a reduction in worker compensation costs and lost time injuries.
