In 1969, Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services, Inc. ® pioneered specialized insurance coverages designed to meet the unique needs of America's emergency service organizations.

Neglected and misunderstood by many insurance companies, the emergency service industry was in need of an innovative approach to insurance products and risk management services. VFIS accepted the challenge and today provides insurance, education, training and consulting to more emergency service organizations in North America than any other provider.

VFIS is a member of Glatfelter Program Managers, one of the largest insurance program managers in the U.S. In addition to VFIS, Glatfelter manages several specialty programs that include municipalities and public entities, water and sewer districts, hospice and home healthcare agencies, senior living and religious organizations. WHO WE ARE

1968-1971

The first VFIS insurance policy was sold by Arthur J. Glatfelter in 1968 and the first logo was introduced in 1969 when Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services, Inc. ® was incorporated.


1971-1979

In 1971, a new logo was designed using the initials of the name, Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services.



1979-1983

In 1979, the logo was expanded to include the Maltese cross, firefighting symbols and a reference to the York, Pennsylvania, location.



1983-1994

The early eighties saw an increase in program activity, which marked several changes, including a new logo.



1994

In 1994, VFIS celebrated 25 years of dedication, service and commitment to emergency services. The 25th anniversary introduced a new VFIS logo.



1994-1999

In 1994, the name Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services, Inc. ® was shortened to VFIS and the star of life was added to the VFIS logo.



1999-2002

In 1999, the VFIS name was taken out of the Maltese cross and star of life and placed beside the symbol.



2002-Present

In 2002, “A Division of Glatfelter Insurance Group” was added underneath the VFIS name.
