Every 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a call somewhere in the nation.1 But what happens when the tones go off – and no one comes?
The number of volunteer firefighters has been falling steadily since the eighties. This represents a major problem for the fire service as almost 70% of firefighters in the country are volunteers.2 While there’s no standout reason for the decline, research shows that urbanization combined with the increase of dual-income households and the demands of training and fundraising are taking a toll on volunteer commitment.3
What can your department do to help recruit and retain responders?
- Focus on leadership. Effective leaders set a direction for the department, which is an issue causing people to stay or leave.
- Consider benefits. From a simple ‘thank you’ to more formal Length of Service Award Programs, benefits play a significant role in recruitment and retention.
- Spread the word. Market your department in your community, be active on social media, and have a website.
Volunteer firefighters are still the iconic heroes that we’ve always looked up to. With some hard work and new tactics, you can rebuild your community’s first line of defense for future generations.
