New State Laws Require Firefighter Cancer Coverage

NEW YORK STATE ADOPTS LEGISLATION FOR FIREFIGHTER CANCER COVERAGE

New York has recently joined Georgia in requiring statutory cancer coverages for fire departments. This legislation is expected to continue to expand to other states, and will likely impact product offerings for many agents and brokers as it does.

Beginning on January 1, 2019, all New York state volunteer fire departments will be obligated to provide a separate cancer insurance policy to their members.

VFIS currently offers Critical Illness insurance including 24/7 on-and off-duty cancer coverage to members, and we are working to design a program specifically tailored to meet the requirements of this latest legislation. We are proud to see these laws being passed and feel that the initiative represents a significant increase in protection for those serving their communities as volunteer firefighters.
