CDC finalizes flu prevention guidance for health settings

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued new guidance for preventing the flu in healthcare settings. This new version takes into account the wide availability of a seasonal flu vaccine that includes the 2009 H1N1 virus, which the CDC expects to see again during the upcoming flu season. Other new information that triggered the update includes the recommendation for surgical masks rather than N-95 respirators when providing routine care for flu patients. New savings tool is now available to volunteer EMS Departments

Volunteer EMS departments now have a tool available to figure out the amount of money their department saves the community. The EMS Cost Savings Calculator, which was created by the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) Foundation, also provides resources for presenting data to the municipalities who fund the department. The 2010 Billy Goldfeder Fire Service Organizational Safety Award recipient announced
(September 13, 2010) VFIS and the International Association of Fire Chief's Safety, Health and Survival Section (IAFC-SHS) are pleased to announce that the 2010 recipient of the Billy Goldfeder Fire Service Organizational Safety Award is Austin Fire Department. Austin Fire Department was recognized for their Wellness Center initiatives. Established in 2006, The Wellness Center Program conducts mandatory medical surveillance and physicals on all uniformed firefighters. The Wellness Center also has resources to support fitness and behavioral health. Individual exercise allows the Wellness staff to play a significant role in injury rehabilitation. Today, the Wellness center is in the process of acquiring an electronic medical records system to enable the doctors to study firefighters for health and fitness trends. The award was presented at the 2010 IAFC Conference in Chicago.

Logistics of Handling Bariatric Patients Risk Communiqué now offered by VFIS

VFIS Announces Online Seat Belt Safety Class
VFIS has announced the addition of “Seat Belt Safety” to their online training classes. The course is intended to help individuals better understand the need for the use of Seat Belts, the development of a Standard Operating Guideline for their use, and the involvement in the National Seat Belt Pledge program.
